On Thursday September 30, 2021 (the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation), we will gather on Zoom to discuss the film The Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Land, Strong Hearts.

Produced by the Anglican Church of Canada, this film was created as a means of deepening our church's understanding of our role in colonization, the history and legacy of residential schools, and why apologies to former residential school students, their families, and communities were necessary.

Those who wish to participate should view the film in advance (video embedded below) and prepare for a discussion about the impact of the film on our understanding of the church's participation in colonization. As you watch the film, reflect on the following questions:

  • What in this film resonates with my heart? Why?
  • What in this film unsettles my spirit? Why?
  • Where do I hear the voice of Christ? Where do I hear the crucified peoples of these lands?
  • What is Spirit inviting me to do?
    • What, in my context, might be a tangible next step toward justice and right relations?

On Thursday evening we will have a chance to reflect on our responses to the film, and to contemplate next steps in our journey of learning, un-learning, and re-learning how to be faithful to Jesus and our Indigenous neighbours.
