Stations of the Cross
Presented by Liturgical Artist Karen Brodie Archibald

Saturday April 1, 2023 | 2.00pm
St. Andrew's (1347 Pine Avenue, Trail)

What are the Stations of the Cross?

The Stations of the Cross take us on a pilgrimage journey, helping us to more deeply experience Jesus' ministry amongst us. Each devotion focuses on a specific event from his last day, taking us from Jesus' condemnation by Pilate all the way to the tomb. Through words and images, Karen will take participants through fourteen stations of art and contemporary reflection.

The experience itself takes about 2 hours. There is an introduction to the devotional, then an exploration of the artwork for the 14 Stations of the Cross, plus 14 reflections devotional reflections written by 14 different clergy from 9 different Christian denominations in Canada, the US and the UK.

Palm Sunday

Sunday April 2, 2023 | 10.00am
St. David's (614 Christina Place, Castlegar)

Please bring branches of palm or cedar to wave in the procession.

What is Palm Sunday?

On Palm Sunday, we celebrate Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On this day, Jesus is greeted with loud shouts of "Hosanna," as he approaches the city. The assembled crowds gather the branches of local plants (palms in Jerusalem, cedar for the Kootenays), and lay down their coats to line the parade route, as they seek to honour the king they believe has come to set their people free from the forces of destruction, oppression, and death.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, Jesus' harrowing journey towards betrayal, trial, sentencing, execution, the grave, and ultimately, resurrection.

Maundy Thursday

Thursday April 6, 2023 | 6.00pm
St. Andrew's (1347 Pine Avenue, Trail)

This service includes a simple meal.

What is Maundy Thursday?

Tonight we begin the Three Days during which we participate once again in the saving power of Jesus’ passing over from death into life. The Maundy Thursday service includes the words of Jesus’ new commandment (mandatum, from which Maundy comes) to love one another.

As a sign of our calling to follow Jesus’ example of humility and service, we may wash one another’s hands as Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. On this night in which Jesus was handed over to death we also gather at table in a simple meal as a way of commemorating his institution of the Eucharist, or Lord’s supper.

At the conclusion of the service, the altar will be stripped of its furnishings as a sign of Jesus’ abandonment by his disciples.

Good Friday

Friday April 7, 2023
9.30am Hot Cross Buns and Coffee (Lower Level)
10.00am Good Friday Service (Upper Level)
St. David's (614 Christina Place, Castlegar)

What is Good Friday?

The Good Friday service continues the journey through the Three Days of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection. At the heart of this service is a reflection on Jesus' life, drawing us closer to him even as we enter into the disorientation of his death.

As Jesus draws all people to himself, we pray for the whole world for which Christ died. Finally, we honour the cross as the sign of forgiveness, healing and salvation. With all God’s people we are invited to bow before this mystery of faith.

Christ has died, so that we may live.

Easter

Sunday April 9, 2023 | 10.00am
St. Andrew's (1347 Pine Avenue, Trail)
St. Stephen's (902 Union Street, New Denver)

What is Easter?

The glory of Easter is the heart of the Christian gospel. It is the centre of the Church’s faith and worship. In the earliest days of the Church it was the only Christian festival: an annual celebration, in one act, of Christ’s life, death, resurrection, ascension, and his sending of the Holy Spirit.

At Easter, we celebrate—with joy and surprise—that death does not have the final say, marking Jesus' triumphal resurrection from the dead. Easter Sunday also marks the beginnning of 50 days—traditionally known as Eastertide—that ends with Pentecost Sunday.
